Any big milestones since your wedding day?

We adopted a beautiful and playful dog. Getting Roni changed our dynamic by bringing out a new side of each of us that the either hadn’t seen before.

We relocated to North Jersey and bought a house – a big old house. Emphasis on the old. The house is a 1887 Victorian, and while it’s wonderful, it has required us to learn how to caulk bathtubs and fix holes in the wall.

We’ve had lots of new adventures, including travels across the U.S. and Europe. We’ve hiked up many mountains, big and small (mostly big). In 2015, we traveled to Israel with family and indulged in amazing food and culture.

Favorite memory from your 1^st year of marriage:

Shortly after getting married, we both found ourselves unemployed. We used the time to travel to California. The experience strengthened our marriage and served as a reminder that no matter the circumstance, having each other will always be enough.

Favorite memory of your most recent year of marriage:

Ilan: Being in front of the fire with Khushbu, Roni, and a good book. Also, going to estate sales to look for interesting things for our house.

Khushbu: I convinced Ilan to hike up a 14,000 foot mountain with me in Rocky Mountain National Park. I was nervous about the altitude but we worked very well together planning the hike and encouraged each other to the top. We celebrated after with good beer and food.

Have you learned anything new or surprising about your partner since you’ve gotten married?

Ilan: After being together for 6 years prior to getting married there aren’t a lot of dramatic surprises in store, but seeing Khushbu in new situations allows me to continuously see new sides and features of her personality. She is even stronger, kinder, and more a pain in the butt than I already knew.

Khushbu: I’m always surprised at how many new things he’s willing to try with me solely because they are important to me (i.e. see mountain example above).

Piece of advice you’d give other people getting married:

Marry your best friend. Always keep communicating and challenging each other, even when it’s hard.
