Mary + Matt had a beautiful fall day for their wedding at Liberty House. A super-easy going couple, Mary had gray sneakers on under her wedding dress and a leather jacket to complete the fall look. Their wedding ceremony included a few Ukrainian traditions – the rushnyk and korovai.
The rushnyk is an embroidered cloth, often featuring the color red as a symbol of life, health, and energy. The newlywed couple stands on the rushnyk in hope that they will never face hardship or stand on barren ground. This rushnyk was purchased in Kyiv on a family trip to Ukraine.
The korovai is a wedding bread, traditionally baked by several members of the newlyweds’ community as an expression of support for the couple. There is a great deal of symbolism in the loaf: the birds represent the couple and their community, the braids celebrate the intertwining of families, the vines are signs of beauty and eternal love.
Congratulations to the happy couple!
